Join us for a week-long masterclass with photographers Barabara Bosworth and Emily Sheffer.
This workshop is designed to help participants use photography to create narratives through landscape photography. Utilizing the wide range of scenic opportunities that Alaska has to offer, instructors will guide students through the intricacies of metaphor within image-making. Discussion topics include natural, human, and cultural history, within the scope of landscape photography. Students will also be encouraged to connect these themes to their own personal journeys, discovering how their unique perspectives can shape the stories they tell through their images. Through a combination of lectures, critiques, and immersive field sessions, Bosworth and Sheffer will collaborate with photographers to help them develop powerful visual stories that connect themselves with the natural world.
Barbara Bosworth is a photographer whose large-format images explore both overt and subtle relationships between humans and the natural world. Whether chronicling the efforts of hunters or bird banders or evoking the seasonal changes that transform mountains and meadows, Bosworth’s caring attention to the world around her results in images that inspire viewers to look closely. Her single images display generous attention to detail, while her large-scale triptychs offer a panoramic perspective. All of Bosworth’s projects remind viewers that we shape nature and, in turn, are shaped by it. Bosworth grew up in Novelty, Ohio. She currently lives in Massachusetts, where she is a professor emeritus of photography at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. Bosworth’s work has been widely exhibited, notably in exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Cleveland Museum of Art, Denver Art Museum, and Peabody Essex Museum.
Emily Sheffer is a photographic artist, educator, and book designer. She is the founder of Dust Collective, a handmade and small edition photography book publisher. Sheffer is the studio director for Barbara Bosworth. In 2024, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Photography at the University of Hartford. Sheffer earned her MFA in photography from The University of Hartford, and BFA in photography from The Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She currently lives in Massachusetts.
